Plant Source – Orange
Oranges belong to the Rutaceae family and the Citrus genus. Varieties include satsuma, tangerine, sweet orange, sour orange, Miyagawa, Xinjin, Owari, Wenzhou, and Sichuan oranges. The fruit is relatively small, often round or slightly flattened, with orange-red, crimson, or orange-yellow skin. The peel is thin and loose, with a thin spongy layer, tough texture, and is easily peeled. The fruit has 7 to 11 segments, with flavors ranging from sweet to sour. Oranges contain flavonoids, monoterpenes, coumarins, carotenoids, phthalides, acridones, and glycosyl lipids. They are also rich in vitamin C, dietary fiber, and protein. Citrus flowers, leaves, and peels are high-quality sources for essential oils, with orange peel oil content reaching up to 3%. Oranges can be eaten fresh, juiced, or canned, offering significant economic value.
