Plant Characteristics:
Apricot trees are deciduous. They grow on the ground and are hairless. The leaves are alternate, broad-ovate or round-ovate, with blunt serrations on the edges; near the top of the petiole are two glands. The flowers are pale pink, solitary or in clusters of 2-3, white or slightly pink. The drupe is round, oblong, or oval, with skin ranging from white, yellow to yellow-red, often with a blush and spots on the sun-exposed side. The flesh is dark yellow, sweet, and juicy. The stone is smooth without pores, with thick, grooved edges. The seeds can be bitter or sweet. The flowering period is from March to April, and the fruiting period is from June to July.
Growing Environment:
In a few areas, apricots grow wild, particularly in the Ili region of Xinjiang, where they form pure forests or mix with wild apple forests, at altitudes up to 3000 meters. Apricots are also cultivated worldwide.
Wide Range of Uses:
Apricots are an important economic fruit tree species and a common fruit, rich in nutrients like sugar, protein, calcium, and phosphorus, along with vitamins A, C, and B vitamins. Apricot wood is hard, making it ideal for furniture; apricot branches can be used as fuel, and the leaves can be used as feed. Apricots are primarily propagated by seeds, which require stratification in moist sand to germinate, but can also be grafted using seedling rootstocks.
It is believed that apricot trees originated in Xinjiang, China, making them one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees in China. The Muya Apricot from Shufu County, Kashgar, Xinjiang, with its thick flesh, thin skin, and sweet, juicy flavor, is known as the "King of Apricots."
